Visual Culture of the American Civil War

We will examine the art and visual culture of the American Civil War. The seminar will take advantage of the exhibitions and other events that will be staged around Chicago this fall to mark the war's sesquicentennial, including the Newberry's exhibition Home Front: Daily Life in the Civil War North. The course will encompass architecture, landscape design, painting, sculpture, photographs, lithographs, newspaper articles and illustrations, guidebooks, maps, memory albums, sheet music, and souvenirs. Ten sessions, $220.

Diane Dillon is Director of Scholarly and Undergraduate Programs at the Newberry. She holds a Ph.D. in the history of art from Yale University.
