The People's Pictures: American Illustration
Tuesdays, 6 - 7:30 pm

Experience the United States of the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-centuries through the art of American illustrators on the covers and pages of popular magazines such as Harper's Weekly and the Ladies' Home Journal. We will consider questions of style, technique, reproduction technologies, and consumer culture as we cover topics from the Civil War and leisure culture, to the New Woman in the work of illustrators from Winslow Homer to Norman Rockwell. Ten sessions, $210.

Patricia Smith Scanlan holds a Ph.D. in art history from Indiana University, with a specialization in American art and visual culture. She is an art education consultant and an adjunct lecturer at the Art Institute of Chicago.
