The Long Road to Emancipation Sold Out
Saturday, 9 am - 4 pm
March 2

When it was issued 150 years ago, the Emancipation Proclamation was hailed as an act of great humanity and derided as an act of monumental hypocrisy. In this one-day seminar we will analyze the path taken by President Lincoln to destroy the "peculiar institution" and make way for a new "birth of freedom." Participants are encouraged, but not required, to read Allen Guelzo's Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation: The End of Slavery in America before the class meeting. One session, $120.

Joseph Harrington holds an M.A. in history from the University of Connecticut. He has led numerous Newberry seminars.
