The Fiction of Cormac McCarthy Sold Out
Wednesdays, 5:45 - 7:45 pm
June 5 - July 24

McCarthy has been characterized as "our greatest living writer" and "the worthy disciple both of Melville and of Faulkner." But he is not for the faint of heart, and his themes-when not considered with an appreciation for the majesty of his style-can overwhelm and depress. This course will provide the guidance, context, and collaboration to allow McCarthy's ideas to resonate freely and his prose-Shakespearean, Faulknerian, but ultimately, McCarthy's own-to sing. We will start with No Country for Old Men, continue with his Pulitzer-prize winning The Road, and end with his masterpiece, Blood Meridian. Eight sessions, $190.

Matt Laufer holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University and has taught literature at Columbia, Barnard College, and various college preparatory schools. He has taught Newberry seminars on Vladimir Nabokov, William Faulkner, Virginia Woolf, and literature and censorship.
