The Broadway Musical, 1960-1979
Thursdays, 2 - 4 pm
February 21 - April 11

This is the third in a series of classes on the musical from its inception in the 1920s. Traditional shows by older composers (such as Rodgers and Hammerstein and Lerner and Loewe) competed in the 1960s with a new flamboyant style exemplified by The Fantasticks and a complex mode introduced by Stephen Sondheim. Spectacle came to prominence as melodic writing faded. Audiences responded strongly, setting remarkable box office records. Eight sessions, $190.

Guy A. Marco holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, has taught in eleven universities, and has written or edited more than fifty reference books including Literature of American Music III. He has led Newberry seminars since 1996.
