Music from Hungary
Thursdays, 2 - 4 pm, February 20 - April 10

For a small country (its population about equals that of New York City) Hungary has given birth to a remarkable number of composers, conductors, singers, and instrumentalists. We will study recordings by George Szell, Eugene Ormandy, Janos Starker, Joseph Szigeti, András Schiff, Fritz Reiner, Eva Marton, and Georg Solti as they render work by Béla Bartók, Ernst von Dohnányi, Zoltán Kodály, Franz Lehár and other natives. We will also sample folk music and gypsy tunes. Eight sessions.

Guy A. Marco, who holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, has taught in eleven universities and written or edited more than fifty reference books. He has led Newberry seminars since 1996.
