The Hanoverians: Britain and Ireland 1714-1837

The era of the Hanoverian monarchs was marked by political challenges, social and economic transformations, and cultural transition. This course will explore such topics as the Jacobite rebellions in Scotland; Penal Laws and Protestant Ascendancy in Ireland; the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution; women and family relationships; the "madness" of George III; British responses to the American and French revolutions; the 1798 Rising in Ireland; the Regency; Catholic Emancipation; and the Reform Act of 1832. Please read the first two chapters of The Age of Aristocracy for the first meeting. Ten sessions.

Frank Biletz holds a Ph.D. in history from the University of Chicago, with a primary specialization in modern British and Irish history. He is currently Lecturer in History at Loyola University Chicago.
