Literature and Opera
Saturdays, 10 am - Noon
March 2 - April 20 (class will not meet March 16 and March 30)

Opera has been inspired by myths, novels, and sometimes plays. Librettos, however, differ greatly from their sources in length, emphasis, and interpretation. We will study five operas from a variety of countries and periods: The Barber of Seville (Beaumarchais/Rossini), The Queen of Spades (Pushkin/Tchaikovsky), Dialogues of Carmelites (Bernanos/Poulenc), Salome (Wilde/R. Strauss), and The Turn of the Screw (James/Britten). We will read the original literary sources and (as appropriate) the libretto, and view portions of each opera. Six sessions, $170

Rosina Neginsky holds an M.A. in literature from the University of Paris IV and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
