Japanese Bookbinding Sold Out
Saturdays, 10 am - 1 pm
June 22 - July 27

Explore the craft of Japanese bookbinding. Radically different in methodology and materials from their European counterparts, traditional Japanese bindings focus almost exclusively on paper, thread, and paste to create a variety of structures. This class will introduce those materials and techniques. Participants will view two films documenting the production of washi, inks, and brushes, and will make four different bindings sampling the history of the craft. Six sessions, $210 (includes a $10 materials fee).

Barbara Korbel is Collections and Exhibitions Conservator at the Newberry and she holds an M.A. in art from Northern Illinois University. She has taught workshops in bookbinding at the Penland School of Craft, Hollander's School of Book and Paper Arts, University of Iowa, and the Paper & Book Intensive.
