Gustav Flaubert's Madame Bovary
Saturdays, 1 - 3 pm
February 23 - April 27 (class will not meet March 30)
Using Flaubert's great realist masterpiece, Madame Bovary, as our focus, we will also read shorter fiction by Balzac and Chekhov, and examine French impressionist painting, in order to trace the depiction of everyday life as it developed in nineteenth-century Europe. Please read part one of Pere Goriot for the first session. Nine sessions, $200.
Benjamin Lytal is a writer and critic. His first novel, A Map of Tulsa, will be published in April; his criticism has appeared in the Nation, the London Review of Books, and the Wall Street Journal.
