In a survey of European history since World War II, we will consider such topics as post-war recovery, social democracy and welfare states, decolonization in Asia and Africa, May 1968 in Paris, the "Prague Spring," the Thatcher revolution, Solidarity in Poland, the fall of the Berlin wall and the reunification of Germany, the revolutions of 1989, the breakup of Yugoslavia, immigration and identity, Islam in Europe, and the current economic crisis of the European Union. Please read chapter one of The Struggle for Europe: The Turbulent History of a Divided Continent, 1945 to the Present for the first session. Ten sessions, $210.

Frank A. Biletz holds a Ph.D. in history from the University of Chicago, with a primary specialization in modern British and Irish history. He is Lecturer in History at Loyola University Chicago and has been teaching seminars at the Newberry since 1994.
