Chicago's Musical Heritage, 1920 - Present
Thursdays, 2 - 4 pm
October 3 - November 21

This is the second of two seminars covering the people, organizations, and events of music in Chicago. Attendance at the first seminar, which focused on the nineteenth century, is not a requirement for this course. We will consider the flowering of jazz in the city, the rise of gospel and country music, and the music of ballrooms. Several important opera companies gave important performances, culminating in the Lyric Opera. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra attained world prominence. We will discuss these developments and listen to representative recordings. Eight sessions, $200.

Guy A. Marco, who holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, has taught in eleven universities and written or edited more than fifty reference books. He has led Newberry seminars since 1996.
