Woody Guthrie and the American Protest Song
Thursdays, 5:45 - 7:45 pm
November 1 - December 6 (class will not meet November 22)

Singer and political activist Woody Guthrie believed that music should be used as a tool for social change and wrote more than 1,200 songs, including the unofficial American national anthem, "This Land Is Your Land." In honor of the centenary of his birth, we will concentrate on the role Guthrie played in the American folk music revival and, in particular, his contribution to the protest song. Five sessions, $150.

June Sawyers is the author of Bob Dylan: New York and taught "'The Country I Come from Is Called the Midwest': Bob Dylan and the American Song Tradition" at the Newberry in 2009.
