Baroque Opera
Saturdays, 10 am - Noon
October 13 - December 8 (class will not meet November 24)

We will explore the world of opera during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in Italy, France, and England (with a glance at Germany and Austria), through study of its music, poetry, drama, stage conventions, and iconography. We will examine the artistic achievements of its great composers and glamorous star performers. We will conclude with discussions of modern revivals of Baroque opera, attempts to recreate its lost sounds, and the complex questions surrounding the possibility of authenticity. Eight sessions, $190.

Jeff Nigro is an art historian and lecturer and has been affiliated with the Art Institute of Chicago for over twenty years. John Nygro graduated from the American Conservatory of Music and has been a performer for over thirty years.
