Between East and West: Joseph Conrad's Fiction
Wednesdays, 5:45 - 7:45 pm
June 13 - July 25 (class will not meet July 4)

Joseph Conrad's novels, tales, short stories, and essays have profoundly influenced literature and culture in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. We will examine Amy Foster, Prince Roman, the novella Heart of Darkness, and the novel The Secret Agent. Amy Foster and Prince Roman are indispensable for understanding Conrad's Polish origins and the person behind the artist. We will approach this topic through lectures, discussions, and close readings of the texts. Film clips will be incorporated to illustrate key episodes and to underscore the cinematic quality of Conrad's narrative style. Six sessions, $170.

Alex Kurczaba is Associate Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
