“The Memoir of Lieutenant Dumont, 1715-47”
As a young lieutenant, Jean-François-Benjamin Dumont de Montigny set sail for Louisiana in 1719. Fortune failed to smile upon Dumont in America, however. Over the next 18 years, he suffered a long list of calamities.

Carla Zecher will share the story of what Dumont experienced and how he fared in the end, as well as how his memoir, which resides at the Newberry, came to be translated and recently published, bringing to life the world of colonial France.
