Newberry's 2010 Book Fair a Great Success

We’re delighted to announce that the Newberry’s 2010 Book Fair raised a record-breaking $168,000! Items that sold ranged from paperback mysteries and romance novels, to a first-edition copy of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Our heartfelt thanks to our many shoppers, who purchased thousands of used books and other items, and to our more than 200 volunteers, who contributed some 2,000 hours of service. Their commitment enables the Newberry to hold this tremendous event at minimal cost, and we simply could not do it without them. We also are grateful to Whole Foods Market and Chicago Reader for their support of the Book Fair, and to the other businesses that provided in-kind donations. Finally, we thank you for your continued support of the Newberry Library not just during the Book Fair, but also throughout the year.
One hundred percent of the items for sale at the Book Fair are generously donated, which helps us honor our commitment to the environment through recycling. On Monday, community literacy programs, schools, and other non-profit organizations were invited to select from the remaining books and other items for their organizations.
We encourage people to donate books for the 2011 Book Fair, but request that they wait to drop off items at the Newberry until after Labor Day. Mark your calendar for next year’s Book Fair, which will be held Thursday, July 28 through Sunday, July 31, 2011.
